This weekend was Theo's 2 week birthday and also marked what would of been our 38th week of pregnancy. The last couple of weeks have been delightfully chaotic with last week being our first week at home fending for our selves after a full week in hospital. Due to this I've not really had a lot of time to even entertain the idea of writing a post so this will generally just be a bit of a catch up of the last few weeks with our new family unit of four. Plus I've jam packed it full of some of the many pictures I've taken! Who doesn't love a bit of baby spam!
HOSPITAL & INCUBATORS
So the first week of our lives together and we spent it in hospital! This obviously had it's plus points though - how many people have free 24/7 help with feeding and general irrational new baby questions! - but after a previous 3 days on a ward before Theo even arrived, 7 additional days of hospital food and the same 4 walls was a tough challenge. Unfortunately, Theo's hospital stay wasn't much better than mine and the poor little soul was subjected to daily heel pricks and sharp pokes and prods due to him not being able to maintain his temperature on the first day. He spent the first few nights in a warming incubator to make sure he didn't get chilly whilst also having daily blood tests for his potential jaundice levels. The silver lining to this however was that due to the size of his hefty incubator we were moved to our own room for the whole stay. On the 4th night, we finally said goodbye to the incubator - only to be told the next morning that our little man would be going back in it the following day for light treatment for his jaundice. This was all pretty upsetting - which sounds really silly seeing as it was purely a plastic container with a blue light.... - and I had a little bit of a mental breakdown which involved me sitting on the shower floor and sobbing for hours. The mischievous so and so just wouldn't leave his eyes covered with the tiny eye mask and it was a long 6 hour slog overnight. But it all payed off and the next day we were told that the blood tests shown his levels had dramatically decreased. By the Saturday, a week since his birth, Theo and myself were all signed off and ready to head home. We bundled our new addition in to his ridiculously oversized car seat and off home we went.
MEETING ARCHIE
I won't lie, I was a little bit apprehensive about Archie meeting his new, less fury brother. We completely forgot to send home the blanket for him to get used to Theo's scent and he'd been a little neglected over the last week. Plus after not seeing me for nearly 2 weeks he was going to be super excitable. As soon as I walked in the house I ran upstairs to give him the biggest squidge and kiss ever. When we brought in the car seat containing Theo, Archie was really curious. He had a good sniff of him and started trying to lick his toes. That night, every little sound Theo made Archie jumped to attention and ran over to the moses basket to make sure he was ok - which as cute as it was, was bloody knackering! Over the next few nights Archie finally calmed down and still sneaks in the occasional foot lick to make sure he knows he still loves him. He seems to have taken a very protective shine to him and I can't wait to see how their friendship develops...when Theo is a little bigger obviously!
FIRST WEEK AT HOME
Our first week at home was full of sleeping, nappy changing and midwife visits. Over the course of the week Theo wacked on a cracking 4lbs from when we left the hospital. This may of been down to the gruelling 2 hour feeding schedule we tried to stick to. We were both discharged from midwife care and the health visitor came round to introduce herself. We took our first trip out, - ok, it was only 10 minutes up the road but still! It was a start! - tackled our first proper explosive nappy and even had our first bath. As you can see, Theo wasn't the biggest fan of being exposed and naked in the bath.
We are now into our second week at home and are currently getting to grips with night feeds and sleeping. All in all, he's a pretty good baby when it comes to sleeping...he just gets a little confused between 2am and 5am!
